President Bola Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri as Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, following the late former President’s passing on July 13, 2025. The announcement was made during a special Federal Executive Council session on Thursday, July 17, in Abuja, held in honour of and condolences for President Buhari  .

According to the Federal Ministry of Education, this renaming is a tribute to Buhari’s contributions to national development, especially in the education sector and the fight against terrorism in the North-East.

Reactions were mixed. While the Ministry applauded the move, stating it honours Buhari’s commitment to education, critics especially within the University of Maiduguri community, warned that renaming the university erases its legacy and identity. Former Senator Shehu Sani described the change as unnecessary and urged that the university’s name remain unchanged. The ASUU chapter at UNIMAID issued a formal statement rejecting the renaming, calling the decision ill‑conceived, unilateral, and disrespectful to the institution’s autonomy  .

According to reports, over 1,600 alumni, students, and civic groups have signed a petition against the name change, arguing that the university’s identity and historical significance must be preserved.
