President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the passing of his predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at approximately 4:30 pm after a prolonged illness. Tinubu extended his deepest condolences in a phone call to Hajiya Aisha Buhari, the former President’s widow. As a mark of respect, flags across the country have been ordered to fly at half staff.
President Tinubu has also directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to escort President Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.
The announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, on July 13, 2025. President Buhari, who served as a two term civilian president from 2015 to 2023 and previously as military Head of State from 1984 to 1985, left behind a legacy of national transformation efforts and controversies.
Vice President Shettima and a delegation of top officials are already in London to oversee arrangements and accompany Buhari’s remains home. The late President is scheduled to be buried on Tuesday, July 15, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
