Many people mistakenly believe that consuming a lot of salt makes the body stronger or healthier. In reality, this belief is misleading. While sodium, a key component of salt, is essential for bodily functions, it is only needed in small amounts.
A common myth is that avoiding added salt means you are safe from its effects. However, most typical diets already contain hidden salt, especially from processed foods. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the recommended daily salt intake is less than 5 grams. Exceeding this can lead to serious health problems, including high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease.
Excessive salt intake is a silent but deadly threat, contributing to an estimated 1.8 million deaths globally each year. To stay healthy, it is important to season food with care, read nutrition labels, and reduce reliance on salty processed foods.
Salt is important, but only in moderation. Taking steps to limit salt intake is a smart move for a healthier heart and longer life.
