Tension gripped Umar Suleiman Female Hall of Residence at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, yesterday afternoon when a female student was apprehended while allegedly trying to steal a phone from a sleeping roommate. The incident occurred around 3 PM and has sparked renewed concerns about hostel security.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as shouts of “Thief! Thief!” echoed through the hall. According to a resident who preferred anonymity, the suspect had entered the room and attempted to quietly remove a phone from beneath a sleeping student’s arm.
“The sleeping girl suddenly woke up and grabbed her wrist,” the witness said. “She screamed for help, and within seconds, other students rushed in and blocked the thief from escaping.”
Security personnel arrived shortly afterward and escorted the suspect to the security unit. The hostel’s Chief Security Officer assured students that the matter would be handled in accordance with university regulations, although no details have been released yet.
While many students praised the victim’s quick reaction, others expressed frustration over repeated thefts in the hostel.
“This isn’t the first time something like this has happened,” said Fatima Aliyu, a 200-level student. “We need stricter checks at hostel gates and better surveillance.”
However, some residents urged caution.
“Yes, theft is wrong, but we must let the school authorities investigate properly,” said Fadilah Ahmad, an engineering student.
As of the time of this report, the Student Affairs Division has not released an official statement. Sources indicate the suspect may face disciplinary action, including possible suspension. The victim has since recovered her phone, and hostel leaders are reminding students to secure their personal belongings.
The incident has reignited debate over safety in shared campus living spaces and the need for improved preventive measures.
