Rodrygo Goes, Real Madrid’s 24 year old Brazilian forward, is at the center of mounting transfer speculation following a noticeable decline in his playing time under new manager Xabi Alonso. With Arsenal and Liverpool reportedly monitoring his situation, questions are growing about his long-term future at the Bernabéu.
Signed from Santos for €40 million in 2019, Rodrygo has delivered solid performances over the years, registering 68 goals and 50 assists in 267 appearances. His contributions were instrumental in securing two UEFA Champions League titles during his time with the club.
However, the 2024–25 season marked a turning point. The high profile arrival of Kylian Mbappé has shifted Rodrygo’s role within the squad, often pushing him into unfamiliar positions on the right wing or as a makeshift No. 9. His form suffered as a result scoring just one goal in his final 22 matches of the season.
Under Alonso, Rodrygo’s presence in the starting XI has diminished significantly. He has not started five consecutive matches under the new manager and has featured for just 23 minutes in the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup. Although Alonso insists the decisions are purely tactical, fans have expressed concern, with some accusing the manager of “treating Rodrygo like a Castilla player.”
The situation has also caused tension behind the scenes. Rodrygo’s father and agent, Eric Goes, has reportedly clashed with the club’s hierarchy over his son’s limited involvement. While Real Madrid maintain a staggering €1 billion release clause on the player, sources indicate that a bid in the region of €80–120 million could be considered.
Both Arsenal and Liverpool are said to be making inquiries. Liverpool, in particular, are eyeing Rodrygo as a potential replacement if Luis Díaz departs this summer, while Arsenal view him as a valuable addition to their attacking depth.
With the summer transfer window heating up, Rodrygo’s future remains uncertain. Once a rising star in Madrid’s galaxy of talent, he now stands at a career crossroads, one that could lead to a fresh start in the Premier League.
