Professor Rahanatu Lawal, Coordinator of the Gender Policy Unit at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has urged female students of the institution to take advantage of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
She made the call during a panel session at the Leadership Summit held 12th July, at Yusuf Bala Usman Hall, which focused on empowering female students of ABU.
According to Professor Rahanatu, only 22 percent of applicants for the NELFUND loan from ABU were female, while 78 percent were male. She emphasized the need for more female participation, stressing that the loan is interest free and comes with a monthly stipend of ₦20,000.
“NELFUND is a loan without interest, and I would encourage you to take it. That would prevent you from trying to rely on other people,” she said.
She further encouraged female students to pursue some level of financial independence, explaining that self reliance can protect them from being vulnerable to exploitation. She cited cases of young women who were deceived with small gifts or money, only to end up in tragic situations.
