Former President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest on Monday, July 15, 2025, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, following Islamic burial rites. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led a host of dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and several former Nigerian leaders, to pay their last respects to the late statesman.

According to reports from Premium Times and Reuters, the burial took place shortly after Buhari’s remains were flown in from London, where he died on Sunday, July 13, following a prolonged illness. The ceremony, held at his private residence, was attended by family members, including his widow Hajiya Aisha Buhari, children, and extended relatives.

President Tinubu, in his address, described Buhari as a patriot, soldier, and statesman whose legacy would endure for generations. He praised Buhari’s unwavering commitment to the nation and his role in stabilizing democratic governance. Reuters also reported that the ceremony included a 21 gun salute and full military honors as part of the final rites.

Former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Olusegun Obasanjo, as well as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, were among the dignitaries present. Also in attendance were several serving governors, traditional rulers, members of the National Assembly, and high level representatives from Niger, Ghana, and other African nations.

National mourning was officially declared by President Tinubu, with Nigerian flags ordered to fly at half staff for seven days. The atmosphere in Daura reflected national grief, as citizens gathered to honor the man many regarded as a symbol of discipline and integrity.

Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1984 to 1985 and returned to power as an elected democratic president from 2015 to 2023. His death marks the end of an era, and tributes continue to pour in from around the world, highlighting his impact on anti_corruption efforts, security reforms, and public service.

As Nigerians reflect on his life and legacy, his burial has brought together both supporters and critics in a shared moment of national remembrance.
