The Kano State Police Command has apprehended 98 individuals suspected of being involved in various criminal activities, including armed robbery, thuggery, drug trafficking, theft, and fraud, within the past 24 days.
Among those arrested were 4 suspected kidnappers, 5 suspected drug dealers, 12 suspected motor vehicle thieves, 4 suspected fraudsters, 5 suspected general thieves, and 47 suspected thugs involved in acts of violence and intimidation. This was announced by the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, during a press briefing on Thursday.
In his statement, the commissioner restated his commitment to the safety and security of lives and property, charging everyone in the state to assist in the process
“I assure you that the Kano State Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of lives and property in the State".
“I urge everyone to keep reporting any suspicious activities to the nearest Police Station or through the following emergency contact numbers, 08032419745,” CP Bakori.
The police also recovered other items from the suspects, such as dangerous weapons, stolen vehicles, including cars, tricycles, and motorcycles, mobile phones, illicit drugs, and counterfeit currency.
Commissioner Bakori explained that the briefing was intended to update the public on the progress made in enhancing security and the various crime-fighting strategies the police have implemented. He emphasized the command’s dedication to eradicating crime and ensuring peace and safety across Kano State.
A key highlight of the briefing was the launch of a new security initiative called “Operation Kukan Kura.” This operation is integrated into existing robust policing strategies that have already contributed significantly to crime reduction in the state
He stated that the objective of the new security operation is to curb issues related to thuggery and other security threats across the state.
“The objective of the Special Operation is to detect and disrupt threats associated with thuggery in Kano Metropolis, cross-border kidnapping, and the circulation of narcotics.”
The name “Kukan Kura” reflects the principles of community policing, emphasizing active public participation in law enforcement. The operation encourages citizens to share information, assist in crime prevention, and collaborate with the police to effectively manage and control criminal activities.CP Bakori noted that the Special Operation is to act as a radar to detect and proactively nip in the bud any threats of thuggery related crimes within Kano Metropolis.
“This is in line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to all Police Command and Formations on community-centric policing and strategy to dominate the public space against all forms of crimes and criminality.” He stated.
Commissioner Bakori outlined that the primary goal of “Operation Kukan Kura” is to serve as an early warning system that detects and prevents threats related to:
Thuggery and violent crimes within Kano metropolis, Banditry and kidnapping activities along the state’s borders, Drug trafficking and substance abuse, Other social vices affecting the community, Public Cooperation and Contact Information
The Police Commissioner expressed gratitude to members of the public for their ongoing cooperation, which has been vital in achieving these security gains. He reassured citizens that the police command remains fully committed to protecting lives and property throughout Kano State. He also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior promptly.
