In the early hours of July 11, a major commotion broke out at ICSA-Rahmat Hall, sparking fear and tension among students. A large crowd gathered in front of ICSA Block E, chasing down a suspected thief who had allegedly been caught and was believed to have hidden in one of the rooms.

The incident, which happened around 12 a.m., quickly escalated as angry residents began chanting, “Burn the thief! Burn the thief!” Many were seen wielding sticks, canes, and metal rods, prepared to attack the individual if found.

The tension drew the attention of hostel security personnel, who rushed in to de-escalate the situation.

According to Ibrahim, a 400level Biochemistry student, “What happened isn’t exactly clear. All I know is that the thief was caught, then escaped and ran into another room in another block. After that, nobody could really trace where exactly he entered.”

Another student, Abdulmajeed, a 200level Mechanical Engineering student who stays in the room where the suspect was said to have run into, shared his experience: “I didn’t even know what was going on. I was sleeping when I heard loud shouts outside. Suddenly, it seemed the noise was heading towards our room. Before I knew it, one of my roommates rushed in with a stranger who looked panicked. Then, someone pointed at him saying, ‘That’s the thief!’ But the guy looked shocked and replied, ‘Who is a thief? What did I steal?’ Shortly after, someone in the crowd said, ‘Oh, he’s not the one! I can’t see the thief in this room, he might have entered another room.’”

After listening to conflicting reports, the hostel security officers ruled the incident a false alarm. No arrests were made, and students were urged to return to their rooms.

“This is the kind of incident that could have led to the death of an innocent person,” one concerned eyewitness remarked.
