From Nigeria to the USA: Emmiwuks Sets Out on an Extraordinary Cycling Mission

 By Abdulkadir Ahmad (U19MM1083)

A cyclist, Myam Emmanuel Aondoungwa, also known as Emmiwuks, has embarked on a long-distance journey — from Nigeria to the United States on his bicycle.

He made this known through his X (formerly Twitter) handle, @emmiwuks, on June 30. According to a recent update, he is currently in Benin Republic, heading to Togo, which is over 100 kilometres away, as posted on his X page. Today marks the sixth day since he began his journey.

Emmiwuks’ endeavour has sparked debate on the X platform about its possibility. Some users view the attempt as impossible due to the Atlantic Ocean that separates Africa from North America. Others are curious and in doubt, questioning what route he would take,  with speculations ranging from Egypt–Iraq–Russia–Canada. Some also suggested that he might board a ship to cross the Atlantic, just like other cyclists who have undertaken cross-water journeys. Despite the conversations, Emmiwuks has not made it clear which route he intends to follow.

While the doubts continue, some are cheering him on, offering words of support and wishing him a safe journey.

This is not his first cycling journey. He once rode from Benue State to Lagos, covering a distance of 640 kilometres.

Emmiwuks has explained that this journey is not just about him.

In a post shared on his Buy Me a Coffee fundraising page, he wrote:

“But this journey isn't just about me. The purpose behind it is to raise awareness and funds for vulnerable children, orphans, and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) not only in Nigeria, but across Africa.”

With each kilometre covered, his supporters are watching closely, cheering him on as he pushes forward on what may become one of the boldest cycling adventures out of Africa.
