The President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has removed Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
Senator Natasha, who represents Kogi Central under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was replaced by Senator Aniekan Bassey of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Akwa Ibom State. The announcement was made during the Senate plenary session held on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
Although Senator Akpabio did not give any official reason for the change, some observers believe it may be linked to previous tensions between Senator Natasha and the Senate leadership.
In March 2025, Natasha was controversially suspended for six months following a disagreement with the leadership, a move that sparked national outcry and reactions from civil society groups. A Federal High Court later ruled the suspension unlawful, but the Senate has yet to act on that judgment.
This latest decision is being seen by many as part of a wider political reshuffling in the Senate, aimed at further strengthening the ruling party’s control over key positions.
