A poem honoring the life and legacy of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari ().

“When the Lion Sleeps in Horizon’s Gentle Light”

He strode across the pages of our nation’s tale

A soldier born in Daura’s dusty dawn,

Wielding hope and hardship in equal measure,

From military rule to ballots cast in truth.

A coup’s hush in ’83, power seized with steel,

Then ousted by the tide of Babangida’s turn

A vault of iron will, sharpened by time,

Became the voice that reclaimed democracy’s dream.

In 2015 he rose first to topple a sitting state

Then reelected to stand amid storms and scorching days.

He pledged to uproot graft, to stem the insurgent tide;

From Davos to Abuja, his anti‑corruption crusade rang

But in the hush of midnight markets and empty schoolyards,

Echoed the strains of lives unsettled, aspirations unmet

Still, he held firm to duty's path, a lion weathered but unbowed,

A father, soldier, leader never fully faultless, yet unbroken.

Today, the lion sleeps in horizon’s gentlest light,

His journey ended by London's quiet hospital walls,

Leaving behind the tremor of joy and pain entwined

His legacy a tapestry of valor, fault, and fervent hope.

May the memory of Muhammadu Buhari awaken deeper reflection on leadership, courage, complexity, and unity.

To his family, close and extended, and to every Nigerian, the nation mourns a giant whose presence shaped eras.

May peace and healing find every heart touched by his passage.
